Frequently Asked Questions
Answers for veterans, families and health professionals about DVA Community Nursing.
For Veterans and Families
Is there a cost to me?
No. If you are eligible, DVA funds the Community Nursing services we deliver, so there is no cost to you.
Do I need a referral?
Yes. You need a written referral from your GP, a hospital doctor or discharge planner, or a nurse practitioner. They send it directly to us.
How often will a nurse visit?
Visits are based on your assessed clinical need. After your first assessment, your nurse sets out how often they will visit in your written care plan.
Can my family be present?
Of course. Family members and carers are welcome at every visit, and we are happy to include them in planning your care.
Are war widows and widowers eligible?
Yes. War widows and widowers who hold a Veteran Gold Card can receive Community Nursing services for their assessed clinical need.
What if I move into residential aged care?
Community Nursing is only available to people living in their own home or an Independent Living Unit. If you move into a Residential Aged Care Facility, the facility provides your nursing care.
For GPs and Referrers
Which form should I use?
Use our online referral form, or the DVA Community Nursing Referral (D9389), available on the DVA website. Send it directly to us, not to DVA.
How long is a referral valid?
Referrals from a GP or nurse practitioner are valid for 12 months. Referrals from a hospital are valid for 6 weeks after discharge, after which the GP needs to provide an updated referral.
Do you need a Medication Authority?
Yes, if medication management is requested. Please attach a signed Medication Authority or order from the treating doctor.
How quickly will you respond?
We acknowledge referrals within one business day and contact the client to arrange their first assessment.
Will you keep me informed?
Yes. The client's GP keeps ongoing clinical oversight, and we send progress updates and let you know about any change in condition.
